The take home message, be prepared and vigilant when it comes to the CMS COPS and IGs and periodically review them, know they are subject to interpretation and have a point person to make contact with Consultants/Inspectors. The ASA is an excellent resource to acquire policies surrounding and templates for the COPS.

Gov. Rick Perry has appointed Ed Canales, MD from Mission, TX to the Unclaimed Mineral Proceeds Commission for a term to expire June 1, 2015.

Dr. Canales is a retired TSA Member. He is a member of the Texas Medical Association, American Society of Anesthesiologists, Hidalgo Starr County Medical Society and Knights of Columbus Council 2698. He is also a life member of Texas Exes and the National and Texas State Rifle Associations. Dr. Canales received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas (UT) and a medical degree from the UT Southwestern Medical School, and completed his anesthesia residency at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso.

Pursuant to House Bill 724 of the 83rd Regular Legislative Session, the commission studies and provides recommendations to the Legislature regarding the distribution of mineral proceeds derived from an original land grant, owned by a descendant of an original grantee, unclaimed and presumed abandoned, and delivered to the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
