    TSA President's Update
    February 2, 2010

To: All Texas Society of Anesthesiologists Members, Consultants, & Staff

Hello, TSA members. I’m sure that many of you are following the fascinating twists and turns of the political world involving our Nation’s health care.   These national issues will certainly have a major impact on Texas anesthesiologists. However, I want to use this TSA President’s Update to talk about another Texas medical organization that works hard for all of the physicians and patients in Texas.

Of course, that’s the Texas Medical Association (TMA). The TSA and the TMA are both involved in promoting the interests of physicians and quality medical care for Texans. And clearly, it would be in the TSA’s long-term interest to have active members involved at all levels of the TMA. Therefore, I’m initiating a program to helping TSA members who are interested in getting (more) involved in the TMA.

The TSA is fortunate to have some outstanding members in leadership positions within the TMA. Dr. Ray Callas is our Delegate to the Interspecialty Society, he serves on the Constitution and Bylaws Council, and is a member of the TEXPAC Board of Directors; Dr. Cathy Scholl serves on the Council on Legislation, and Dr. Mary Dale Peterson is an Alternate Delegate to the AMA and serves on the Socioeconomics Council. Dr. Evan Pivalizza, and many others sit on important TMA Committees.

This message is a call for any and all TSA members interested in getting involved in the TMA.   If you’re interested, please reply to me at . I will forward your name to Dr. Callas, the leader of our TSA/TMA delegation. Dr. Callas will be happy to provide information about TMA Committee structure, function, and descriptions. In addition, we’re setting up an informal get-together for TSA members interested in the TMA at the TMA/TSA Interim Meeting in Fort Worth on the weekend of May 1-2, 2010.

Our TSA/TMA members can help you meet other TMA leaders, and provide advice on how to get involved. Lastly, whether or not you’re able to attend the Fort Worth meeting, we’re having a formal meeting for TSA/TMA interested members at our TSA Annual Meeting in San Antonio on September 9-12, 2010.

All you need to do for now is to reply to me, and let me know if you’re interested. Ray or I will follow-up with you.

    See you in the OR,
    Pat
