2017 TSA Transition to Practice (TTP) Program
will be held on Sunday morning at the TSA Annual Meeting in San Antonio

Jeremie Perry, MD

In June, 2016 the TSA held the first annual Transition to Practice Program at UT Houston. The development of this program was a joint project between the Professional Development and Practice Management committees of the TSA. The purpose of the meeting was to address non-clinical skills identified as important to making a successful transition from Resident to Practicing Anesthesiologist. The format and topics covered emerged after extensive discussions within the committees at the TSA as well as from surveys of both residents and recruiting officers from many of the large groups in Texas. The program emphasizes those aspects of professional life which don’t fit into the exceptional traditional education our trainees receive from their residency programs.

The inaugural program in Houston took place amid flooding and downpours which reduced the number able to attend by about 50% from those who initially registered. Those residents who were successful in making the journey were overwhelming in endorsing future editions of the meeting. Additionally, they provided feedback and suggestions which we hope will improve the value of the 2017 meeting for their colleagues.

At the 2016 TSA multiple discussions were held both in an out of committees exploring ways of improving access to the meeting for our residents. Given that many residency programs already make a strong effort to release residents for the TSA annual meeting, and in light of the fact that the Sunday morning schedule is the least congested part of the meeting – this will be the new home for the TTP.

In addition to the Sunday morning schedule we are also fortunate to have already confirmed a sponsor for a Saturday night Dinner, Drinks and Social sponsored by Northstar Group and Laura Vaughn. Laura spoke on personal finance at last years program and received excellent feedback from the attendees.

Speakers for Sunday morning will be from 08:00-11:00 and will review topics including:

Physician Wellness
Personal Finance
Hospital Politics, Structure and Administration
Anesthesia Care Team – “from Resident to Practitioner”
Physician Citizenship
